Bridging Law and Empathy: Why I Became an L.M.S.W.
A familiar refrain heard in counseling sessions amongst a diverse set of practitioners is “You have to go through the pain and adversity in order to get to the other side.”
Turning the Advice Around
Sitting across from clients over the years, that sentence has come up in one form or another more times than I can count. It is easy to offer perspective when you are the one sitting in the facilitator’s chair. It is quite another thing when you turn that lens back on yourself and decide to walk a long, challenging path of personal growth.
I have heeded my own advice, often presented to parties in divorce mediation, to tilt one’s mind and view their world from a different axis point. I took the leap to adopt a different optic on life and to be able to utilize different support expressions from a whole new set of skills.
Seeing the Human Story Behind the Law
When you spend years working strictly inside legal frameworks, conflict gets filtered down into rights, assets, and legal terms. But behind every legal dispute is a human story filled with emotional strain and real anxiety about tomorrow. I knew that understanding the law wasn’t enough—I wanted to deepen my understanding of the emotional landscape people navigate when their lives shift.
The Three-Year Academic Journey
My own situation was not so much filled with pain but the unyielding stress of participating in class lectures; extensive reading, research and studying to pass exams and write papers which has inhabited my life for the past three years.
Balancing professional responsibilities while diving deep into clinical frameworks and assignments wasn’t easy. Late nights and constant studying became my routine, but the drive to build a broader foundation of support kept me moving forward step by step.
Reaching the Other Side as an L.M.S.W.
I am now on the other side, and I am proud to announce that I am an L.M.S.W. (Licensed Master Social Worker).
Reaching this milestone isn’t just about adding credentials after my name. It is about bringing a whole new depth of understanding to the table every single time I meet with individuals and couples.
Combining Social Work and Legal Mediation
I believe that the past three years of training and learning will greatly enhance and broaden my capacity to engage with clients and provide them with the support and knowledge as a Social Worker coupled with years of experience and wisdom as a Mediator-Attorney.
Where legal expertise brings structure and clarity, social work brings active listening and emotional safety. Blending these perspectives allows me to look at conflict as a transitional period that needs careful, balanced handling.
Building a Path Toward a Sustainable Future
The crux of why and how divorce mediation works is found in the working relationship between the parties and the mediator. Transparency, mutual respect and empathy form the basis for finding a path through the pain and into the light of a new and sustainable future.
