Family Mediation

A family can be defined as a group of individuals united by blood or marriage or adoption. Although it is the basic social unit of society, a family can take many forms  Naturally, it’s not uncommon for conflict to emerge within the family unit and mediation can offer each member the guidance, protection necessary to resolve their conflict.

Mediate for Life can assist families with the following:

Family/Sibling Relationship Issues

Family can be the ultimate support group, sharing your happiness and success while being your rock to lean on when times get hard — unless it isn’t. The truth is that lack of harmony within a family can be a major obstacle between you, your happiness and your peace-of-mind.

Our co-mediator paradigm of therapist and attorney is perfectly suited to identify and address the five tell-tale signs of a dysfunctional family dynamic:

  1. Substance Abuse
  2. Excessive Criticism
  3. Lack of Communication
  4. Unpredictability
  5. Lack of Empathy

These behaviors can cause conflict during many life situations such as marriage, birth, graduation and loss of a loved one. Unless they are corrected will lead to a failure to resolve those conflicts and restore family harmony.

We guide you through a regime of nuanced, deliberate steps to address these issues that will bring clarity and transparency to your situation and ultimately lead to the desired resolution.

Raising a Special-Needs Child

Parenting is a difficult, but rewarding, endeavor filled with anxiety and stress as you guide your children through early childhood and onto being young adults. For families who are raising a special needs child those years can extend into adulthood and come with challenges that most parents don’t have to face.

Providing proper educational and medical care along with the added financial responsibilities often makes raising a high needs child seem like an insurmountable task – one that places stress on all members of the family — we’re here to help.

So whether you’re raising a single high-needs child, multiple high-needs children or have both, our mediative process provides the training and support needed to advocate for the needs and rights of your special needs children and the overall health and happiness of each family member.

  1. Coming Out
  2. Gender Identity

  5. Legal Separation6. Liability for Tax Debt, Lawsuits & Criminal Activity

Life Transition Planning

Times of transition can be full of uncertainty and stress, especially for parents becoming empty nesters or retiring. These overwhelming moments can bring conflict and misunderstanding into even the strongest relationships.

These include:

  1. Becoming Empty Nesters
  2. Retirement

We are uniquely positioned to guide you through these transitional challenges with gentle support and non-judgmental conflict resolution to a new family dynamic.

End-of-Life Planning

Confronting one’s own mortality is a difficult prospect for even the most stout-hearted among us. That’s why it’s no surprise that we tend to put off difficult decisions and planning that come with getting older. Typically, it is the spouse, child or significant other who makes the initial inroads into end-of-life planning. These loved ones are often faced with difficult discussions and solutions are not always obvious. However, having a clear, transparent and sustainable plan benefits everyone involved.

We as mediators have the life experience, wisdom and skilled dexterity of training to guide families to resolutions that offer peace-of-mind while preserving their loved one’s personal dignity, comfort, and happiness.

Elder Care

The responsibility of helping an older family member live in a comfortable, safe and healthy environment typically falls to an adult child or a close relative. Today, older people with physical, mental, intellectual and sensory impairments are living longer and such longevity raises issues of financial solvency, long term care and continued and sustainable dignity for the loved one in need of care.

Aside from finding appropriate healthcare and living arrangements, there are several additional intermediate levels of critical concern that need to be considered, discussed and resolved before the ultimate decision is made regarding a nursing home or hospice.

Older people need assistance and help with obtaining groceries and medications from stores; food preparation at home; transportation to doctors visits; access to out-of-home family get-togethers and conflicts surrounding the loss of an older person’s driving privileges.

Quite often there are multiple siblings having to join together to make these imperative decisions and they are not always on the same page as to what should be done — which is where Mediate for Life can help.

Our mediation services provide a safe space for the care givers to process their feelings and the possible outcomes of decisions with the help of experienced, trained and caring mediators. The goal is to provide the best level of care with the highest degree of dignity while supporting and protecting an elderly loved one in need. The mediators of Mediate for Life have years of experience in helping families navigate these issues with kindness and knowledge.
